Alcohol Addiction and the Holistic Alternative
Alcohol addiction is the number one substance abuse problem in the US. Many people every year die from the effects of their substance abuse and addictions and many more die from the issues created by other people’s
problems with alcohol.
When it comes to rehabilitation from Alcohol the success rate of all programs offered is extremely low. There are many reasons for this. The biggest problem when it comes to rehabilitation from alcohol is that most all programs are not holistically structured. The most used method in dealing with alcohol addiction is Alcohol Anonymous (AA). According to the tenants of AA you have to admit to the group that you are an “alcoholic.” While in the meetings you at some point have to get up before the group, declare you are an alcoholic and tell them the “story” of your life and how alcohol has adversely effected you.
AA started many years ago when a couple of guys who were having problems with alcohol decided to come together and support each other. Over time the program expanded to provide mentors for people getting into the program. Despite how long it may have been since you used alcohol you still have to declare yourself an “alcoholic.” The stories are legendary of people going to meetings and despite the fact that they haven’t used alcohol in two decades or longer they still have to declare themselves as alcoholics.
AA is touted by many rehabs as the “only” method that works for alcohol addiction. Peer-reviewed studies peg the success rate of AA somewhere between 5 and 10 percent. That is, about one of every fifteen people who enter these programs is able to become and stay sober. That statistic is sobering in and of itself. Even with low success rates AA has helped thousands if not millions of people. And we applaud their success. But anything and everything can be improved upon if you spend enough time studying the problem and developing a better approach to it.
I would like to present another more holistic approach to alcoholism and explain why someone would want to come to Sacred Space Retreats in Cloverdale California, to deal with their issues of addiction instead of using the traditional methods of the AA model.
First let me start by talking about my own personal family observations with alcoholism. My first introduction to the problems of alcoholism came in the form of my family, in particular with my father. As I have observed our family issues with it, I find that for many people, particularly men in our society, we have a similar pattern when it comes to predisposing us to alcohol addiction.
My Dad was in the military on active duty for 30 years. Then after he retired he “volunteered” for the military for another 30 years. In so doing he is what I call one of the original “hard chargers.” For many years he had an alcohol problem, as a lot of people in the military do as their way of coping with the tremendous stress they have. As time went on I tried to get him to make some changes to his lifestyle such as taking more responsibility for his health and doing things at home like preparing more healthy meals for himself. He was from the “old school ” for sure. He couldn’t relate to taking better care of himself and eating better. He left all the food preparation to my mother. He said to me once that “it wasn’t in his contract” to prepare his own food. I think he was also from the depression era and so for him he thought I was crazy to suggest that he eat healthier (in his mind more expensive) food. For instance, he loved ice cream, and he would always go to the Air Force base not far from where he lived and he would get the cheapest ice cream they had. He would often brag about the inexpensive food he could get from the base commissary. I don’t even think it was real ice cream, it was more like “ice milk.” Anyway, he could just not understand why someone would pay more for something he could get cheaper. Eventually I gave up trying to convince him.
My father started to develop Alzheimers when he was in his mid 70’s . My mother was so wonderful in that she insisted on taking care of him there at home and would not have him go to a convalescent home. In the end it took quite a toll on her. Dad died in 2009. The last 8 years of his life he continued to decline cognitively. At 82 he died not even knowing who I was or even who his wife of 61 years was. It was quite heart breaking of course for all of us, but especially for my mother.
I fully believe that part of his decline was due to all the years he spent struggling with alcohol. I think it damages a persons brain and makes them more susceptible to these issues later on in life. So as I looked back on his life I swore I would do my life differently. I would make time to take care of myself. I would not be a “hard charger ” like him. That is one of the reasons that I gave our motto here, ” To Retreat is Sometimes the Better Part of Valor.” Sometimes it’s better to Retreat then to just continue to charge ahead. The issues of alcoholism are not isolated issues unique to anyone of us. I see them as a pattern of our culture, particularly for men in their own unique way, and women in theirs.
If you look at most people, we kind of follow a similar pattern. We go to school. Eventually we leave school and we get married or create a relationship. Then we work like a mad man or woman until we retire or die, whichever comes first. Somewhere along the way we loose ourselves as we put all of our energy into everyone and everything else, especially our business. We put all of our energy into everything except ourselves.
This is what Sacred Space Retreats in Cloverdale California is all about. We stand ready to support our guests with giving themselves the time and attention and love that one must give oneself. You have to realize you are totally worth the level of time and attention it takes to figure yourself out and to learn to “master yourself.” We all make a choice. Give yourself time and attention, or ignore your bodys cry for help and “charge ahead.”
For me personally, one of the things that helped me out was that I started having health issues very early on in life, so I basically had no choice when it came to giving myself the time and attention that I needed. In that respect I believe we all have problems, it’s just that some peoples’ problems are just a little more apparent then others.
I could never get my Dad to consider coming to Sacred Space because I believe he had a lot of pain that he just wasn’t ready to deal with. Being in the military and doing the ungodly things they ask you to do could only be a very painful experience. We can see that now as our soldiers come back from war psychologically damaged. So, unfortunately, he never considered it. We are here to be that support for you—to create the environment you need to do this.
One thing I learned though my years and especially with my family (two brothers who died from liver cancer from their addictions), is that I am completely and utterly powerless to save anyone. What I can do is save myself and offer myself as a good role model for others to emulate. No one can “fix” you. Its really about you fixing yourself. And the only way I believe that is possible is by giving yourself love (time and attention).
One of the first issues you will have to deal with when it concerns alcoholism is the food you eat. Most people are not aware of this and most rehabs don’t address it. In fact there is a common pattern that occurs when you go to rehabs for help with alcohol. They almost always load people up on caffeine, sugar, pastries, starches and grains. When we eat starches, grains and sugars they are converted in our body into alcohol by an organism called Candida. It’s a “yeast overgrowth.” Many of these programs simply feed people the foods which satisfy their craving for alcohol. Unbeknownst to them, the Candida organism converts those foods back into alcohol in their blood stream, ultimately keeping them at higher blood alcohol levels. That high blood alcohol level and the infestation of yeast leaves them only a step away from their next drink. Most all rehabs ignore this critical issue and this is one of the biggest reasons for their extremely low success rate.
Additionally, most rehab food is institutional food (a common distributor being Sysco) which is high in starch, sugar and grains like breads, pastries, pastas, cookies, etc.
Once as a Nutritional Consultant to Walden House Adolescent Facility I had occasion to go to their food pantry to see what they were serving them. To my disappointment, everything they served, from the fish sticks to the ketchup to the corn or beans, had sugar in it. So being on a specialized diet is important to help you get free of the cravings you may have for alcohol. The problem for rehab institutions is that very few resources are budgeted for their food. To keep within their budget they buy the cheapest institutional foods available to them.
Most rehabs talk about the psychological aspects of a persons alcohol use, but they don’t address the physiological part. Unless you address that, you may be unwittingly giving yourself your next drink, just in a different form. In fact your craving for alcohol, or sugar or grains or starches, may not actually be coming from you. It is a well known fact that in order for Candida Albicans to grow in your body it must be fed. So while a person may think they are craving alcohol or sugar, starch etc, it may actually be the Candida organism craving it for their growth.
If I was going to make beer, for instance, I would take some sugar, yeast, and a grain like hops. I’d put them all in a big pot, then through a process called fermentation, the yeast would convert those grains and sugars into alcohol. That is precisely what is going on in your body.
Most all people addicted to alcohol eat a lot of meat. So in addition to eating foods high in starch like grains and sugars, they eat a high animal protein diet. This creates additional problems for you when you want to come off of alcohol, because it creates an acidic pH in your blood stream and it is high in saturated fats. This puts your body ill at ease to try to deal with anything else. And, strange as it may sound, alcohol is actually an antidote to both. Acidosis (when arterial blood falls below 7.35 pH) is actually very uncomfortable. It makes the body more “inflammed.” That inflammation process makes it challenging to withdraw from alcohol because alcohol is the “antidote.” Have you checked your pH lately? Don’t worry, we will have you do it when you get here. We will have you check it for 4 days, 3 times per day. That will confirm to you where your pH is and give you further understanding of why your body is doing what it is doing. The same with the saturated fat aspects. Alcohol puts that saturated fat more into solution in the arteries. Here at Sacred Space Retreats we serve a vegan diet. A diet free of animal protein. You will be amazed that your craving for alcohol deminishes dramatically when you eat a vegan diet. Does that mean you have to eat a vegan diet forever in order to be free of alcohol addiction? No. When you understand what is going on inside you, it will be easier to keep yourself in moderation once you leave here. While you are here you are being treated for your intense cravings for alcohol. Once that craving is gone and you are healthier, you can eat meat again if you wish, but in more moderation and with a better understanding of what it is doing to you physiologically.
This is why in order for anyone to successfully address alcoholism, you have to address this physiological aspect.
To be on a specialized diet like this is one of the reasons people come to Sacred Space Retreats.
Understanding your Feelings and Emotions
If you are going to successfully address your issues with alcohol or any drug you really have to look at your thoughts, feelings and emotions. Alcohol especially, is a real pain reliever. So you have to look at your pain and find its source and pull it out like a weed growing in a garden.
You really have to get to the core of how you process your thoughts and emotions, and to be able to identify when you are in a state of resistance that could lead you to seek out something like alcohol to deal with the stress that it creates.
When you are resistant to something that is happening or has happened in your life, it causes your body to contract and you experience discomfort. That “resistance ” is stress. Stress will kill you if it persists. And the more you resist something the more stress you have with it. To cope with this stress and resistance, people then turn to alcohol. But of course it only has a temporary effect because it doesn’t stop you from being resistant. It just stops you from feeling the pain and discomfort of your resistance. Ultimately all of our problems start in the mind. The emotions and feelings we have are our bodys way of reflecting what our mind is thinking.
Attachment creates suffering
Our program ultimately is about mastering onesself . Mastering ones mind. And becoming One with oneself.
There is a story of how they catch monkeys in Africa. The way it goes is to say that to catch a monkey you take a large container that has a very small neck to it. Then you take some fruit and put it in the bottom of the container. When the monkey comes along the monkey looks inside, sees the fruit and reaches in and grabs it. Once he grabs the fruit he tries to pull it out but he can’t get it through the small opening at the top. Being attached however, he won’t let go of it. So that is how they are then able to catch him. This illustrates well how we regard our thoughts. We are attached to them. And in our attachment to the thoughts we have, we create pain and suffering for ourselves. Learning to let go of the things that we are attached to is the beginning of our healing and the end of our suffering.
Of course to do this you have to be able to train your mind. Training your mind to not be attached to your thoughts from the past or future is a practice. One in which we will engage in each day during our meditation practice and as you do so, you will become more mindful of your thoughts throughout the day.
You will be surprised at how your stress level goes down and you are able to experience peace by training your mind to be present.
Are you an “Alcoholic?”
One thing we don’t do is label you according to your illness. We don’t make you admit that you are an alcoholic. Because by labeling you as such, then your behavior will never be more than the label you give yourself. We want to give you the most powerful sense of who and what you are. You are here to learn to “Master Yourself.”
Martial arts can be an important tool in the rebuilding of your success. This involves exercises where we demonstrate some movements and you have to repeat and replicate the movement. Of course you won’t be able to do it well initially, but in time and with practice you will. Your mind has a mind, and your body has a mind. The problem is that they are not always in alignment with each other. When you see a move with your mind, you ask your body to replicate the move. But your body has its own ideas about what it wants to do. By practicing the same moves over and over you cause your body to eventually submit to what your mind is telling it to do. This makes you become more in alignment with mind and body. And in this way you get stronger from the inside out. You become ONE.
Abuse of alcohol leaves you open and vulnerable. It doesn’t matter if you go outside and someone hits you up side the head and kills you or if you start drinking alcohol and it kills you. Dead is dead. You have to learn how to protect yourself. Learning these movements will give you more confidence in yourself and help you protect you from anything that could hurt you. Rather then sitting in meetings all day listening to other peoples’ “drunk-a-logs” or even your own, you could spend that valuable time leaning to master yourself and protecting yourself.
By coming to Sacred Space Retreats, you will be giving yourself the gift of your own love, time and attention. And in so doing, you will be giving yourself new tools that can help you rebuild your mental, physical and emotional house. Our program is about “Self Help” and “Self Mastery.” It’s how to get your mind and body into alignment with each other.
Until you do that, you will be “divided” between your mind and your body. When you become unified with yourself, then you step fully into your power. When you are divided you become weaker and are more easily conquered. This is where the term “divide and conquer ” comes from. We use tools to help you become more unified.
On becoming One
If you put ten people in a boat and they are all rowing in a different directions, then the boat just turns around in circles. If everyone is rowing in the same direction then the boat can proceed, “full speed ahead.” This is what happens when you commit to “Mastering Yourself,” to becoming ONE.
That is when you step fully into your power.
“When your story ends, your life begins.” Everyone has a story of how they were hurt in the past. How they didn’t get what they wanted. You can either be stuck in your story or you can commit to your success.
Institutionalization or Private Retreat
Going to rehabs, or taking medications and drugs from doctors can make you more and more “dependent.” The more dependent you are, the weaker you become. The weaker you become the less successful you are. Getting stronger has to be from the inside out, not from the outside in. It’s a process.
We have designed our program to be sure that you don’t feel like you are in an “institution”. Moreover it’s designed to make you feel like you are in your own home. That way you can get to your most relaxed state. And when you get deeply relaxed, you can let your armor down and you can be more open to looking at yourself and understanding yourself.
We take no more than three people at a time because we want you to feel more like you are in a natural setting. We also want to bring to you the highest quality of service, which includes a more specialized and more vital diet.
Everything we have created here at Sacred Space Retreats in Cloverdale California is by design. Its design is to allow you to give yourself the time and attention that you need in order to solve your problem. That is why and how you will create your own success. And it’s why we have a much higher success rate then simply going to AA meetings.
I have been hearing a lot about the use of a new drug called Serafem (Fluoxetine) to treat symptoms of PMS. So maybe this will be a good topic to focus on for this month. First let me say that Serafem is not really a “new” drug but is actually an old drug in disguise. Serafem is actually Prozac only with a different name. The Pharmaceutical Industry is trying to find every known human condition and give you a drug for it. I will discuss depression at another time. For now don’t believe the hype. Serafem ( Prozac) is a stimulant. And what goes up must come down. So you can expect for you to experience depression as well as other conflicting mood swings when you try to reduce the amount your are taking. In other words Prozac causes the very thing it is meant to alleviate. The person winds up painting themselves into a corner and becoming dependent on the drug. Prozac was approved by the FDA only after a 5 to 6 week trial period.
In other words if you take it for longer then that, they don’t know what could happen. Its not meant to be taken long-term. And while this solution may be logically correct, we know that it is not Holistically logical. Antidepressants such as this have been known to cause permanent damage such as Tardive Dyskinesia, which is involuntary muscle movements. If you are having severe symptoms of PMS there is a solution. Remember, your body was made perfectly. When it is having problems of dis-ease, it is a result of something being out of balance. Taking a drug for it will manipulate the symptoms but it wont get to the cause. Further, you will now have to deal with the toxicity of the drug itself. Severe PMS can be dealt with naturally. Call me and ask me how. I can give you some natural solutions for bringing your hormonal system into balance – for instance, there is a company that will do a saliva test for your hormone levels and then formulate a topical cream which can help balance those specific hormones that are out of balance.
There are other alternatives approaches. Your menstrual cycle is a time when your body brings your uterus back from an acid condition to a more alkaline pH, so that the egg can be implanted. Pain such as this during your cycle has to do with being too overly acid, and your hormones being out of balance. If your Pineal gland is calcified over, then you will likely not produce the right hormonal balance in your ovaries or your adrenal glands. This is why one approach would be to alkaline your body while assisting it to remove its toxic overload. Trust that your body was made perfectly by the Creator. Trust that your body is doing exactly what it is suppose to do. You may want to explore these solutions and others before going down the dead end path of using drugs. Your body does not have a deficiency for any drug that is made at a Pharmaceutical company.
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are toxic substances composed of organic chemical compounds and mixtures. POPs are products and by-products of human industry, which are persistent in the environment. This means they are substances that resist photolytic, chemical and biological degradation. They enter the air, travel long distances on air currents and then return to earth. POPs generally have low water solubility and high lipid (fat) solubility, which means they tend to bioaccumulate in fatty tissues of living organisms. These substances magnify by factors of many thousands as they move up the food chain. POPs are also highly toxic, having the potential to injure human health and the environment at very low concentrations.
We are living in a chemical soup! Every person alive today carries approximately 250 chemicals within her or his body, chemicals that did not exist prior to 1945. This is referred to as the “body burden”, and is our common legacy from the process of development and industrialization. About 100,000 chemicals have entered into the market since 1945, and it is estimated that 75,000 of them remain in commercial use today. A startling fact about these chemicals is that most remain untested for their safety in humans and other species. Only about 1.5% to 3% (about 1,125 to 2,250 chemicals) have been tested for carcinogenicity. Moreover, chemical testing tends to study one chemical at a time, whereas real-life exposure is, in fact, coming from a broad spectrum of chemicals that may interact or have additive effects. Most chemical testing is based on the idea that, while damage will occur after a certain level of exposure has been reached, exposure below these levels will cause no harm. These studies often start at elevated levels close to the point where cancer or DNA damage is expected, and the measurements are done on adult laboratory animals. Yet the most recent scientific evidence indicates that fetal contamination can occur at very low levels below those levels which affect adults, and that the timing of exposure may also play a critical role in the possible effects.
International Negotiations to Phase out POPs
During 1996 and 1997, Inter-governmental organizations, including the Inter-governmental Forum on Chemical Safety (IFCS), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) agreed to create an Inter-governmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to establish terms and a global, legally binding convention that seeks to protect health and the environment from harm caused by POPs. The committee’s first meeting was June 29, 1998 in Montreal, Canada. Negotiators were asked to mandate action on twelve POPs. In addition they were asked to develop criteria and a procedure to identify additional POPs as candidates for future global action.
The Dirty Dozen!
The twelve POPs under scrutiny are:
Dioxins, furans, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), DDT, chlordane, heptachlor, toxaphene, hexachlorobenzene, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin and mirex.
In the meantime, what can you do now to protect yourself? First, you should begin to eat low on the food chain. Eating high on the food chain (animal products), exposes you to more of these chemicals because they get into the fat tissues and are held there. The lower on the food chain you eat the less exposure to toxicity. Second, reduce exposure to things bleached white. That includes tampons and other products that have been bleached white. Third you can begin a program to remove the buildup in your own fat tissues which may be lodged in your liver cells. Doing a an extensive liver cleanse is one thing and taking routing saunas would also be something to incorporate in your program. Our liver is responsible for cleansing out our blood stream. Our blood stream is responsible for cleansing out the tissues in our bodies where toxins store themselves. This is especially true for our fat cells.
I spent several days lecturing at the World Environmental Conference on Aspartame marketed as NutraSweet, Equal and Spoonful. In the keynote address by the EPA, they announced that there was an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not understand what toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States. I explained that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject. When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in Aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants). The methanol toxicity mimics multiple sclerosis thus peoples were being diagnosed with having multiple sclerosis in error. The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol toxicity is. In the case of systemic lupus, we are finding it has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with diet Coke and diet Pepsi drinkers. Also, with methanol toxicity, the victims usually drink three to four 12 oz. cans of them per day, some even more. In the cases of systemic lupus, which is triggered by Aspartame, the victim usually does not know that the aspartame is the culprit. The victim continues its use, irritating the lupus to such a degree that sometimes it becomes life threatening. When we get people off the aspartame, those with systemic lupus usually become symptomatic.
Unfortunately, we cannot reverse this disease. On the other hand, in the case of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, (when in reality, the disease is methanol toxicity), most of the symptoms disappear. We have seen cases where their vision has returned and even their hearing has returned. This also applies to cases of Tinnitus. During a lecture I said “If you are using Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, Tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss, you probably have Aspartame disease.” People were jumping up during the lecture saying, “I’ve go this, is it reversible?” It is rampant. Some of the speakers at my lecture even were suffering from these symptoms. In one lecture attended by the Ambassador of Uganda, he told us that their sugar industry is adding Aspartame. He continued by saying that one of the industry leader’s sons could no longer walk — due in part from product usage. We have a very serious problem. Even a stranger came up to Dr.Espisto (one of my speakers) and myself and said, “Could you tell me why so many people seem to be coming down with MS?” During a visit to a hospice, a nurse said that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence.
Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, but to no avail. Nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets. Now there are over 5,000 products containing this chemical, and the PATENT HAS EXPIRED. At the time of this first hearing, people were going blind. The methanol in the Aspartame converts to Formaldehyde in the retina of the eye. Formaldehyde is grouped in the same class of drugs as Cyanide and Arsenic – DEADLY POISONS.
Unfortunately, it just takes longer to quietly kill, but it is killing people and causing all kinds of neurological problems. Aspartame changes the brain’s chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures. This drug changes the dopamine level in the brain. Imagine what this drug does to patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. This drug also causes birth defects. There is absolutely no reason to take this product. It is NOT A DIET PRODUCT. The Congressional record said, “It makes you crave carbo-hydrates and will make you FAT.” Dr. Roberts stated that when he got patients off Aspartame, their average weight loss was 19 pounds per person. The Formaldehyde stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Aspartame is especially deadly for diabetics.
All physicians know what wood alcohol will do to a diabetic. We find that physicians believe that they have patients with Retinopathy, when in fact; it is caused by the Aspartame. The Aspartame keeps the blood sugar level out of control, causing many patients to go into a coma. Unfortunately, many have died. People were telling us at the Conference of the American College of Physicians, that they had relatives who switched from Saccharin to an Aspartame product and how that relative had eventually gone into a coma. Their physicians could not get the blood sugar levels under control. Thus, the patients suffered acute memory loss and eventually coma and death.
Memory loss is due to the fact that Aspartic Acid and Phenylalanine are neurotoxins without the other amino acids found in protein. Thus it goes past the blood brain barrier and deteriorates the neurons of the brain. Dr. Russell Blaylock, neurosurgeon, said, “The ingredients stimulate the neurons of the brain to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees. Dr. Blaylock has written a book entitled, “EXVIROTOXINS: The Taste That Kills”, (Health Press 800-643-2665). Dr. H. J. Roberts, diabetic specialist and world expert on Aspartame poisoning has also written a book entitled, “Defense against Alzheimer’s Disease”, (800-814-9800). Dr. Roberts tells how Aspartame poisoning is escalating Alzheimer’s disease and indeed it is. As the hospice nurse told me, women are being admitted at 30 years of age with Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Blaylock and Dr. Roberts will be writing a position paper with some case histories and will post it on the Internet. According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, “We are talking about a plague of neurological diseases caused by this deadly poison.” Dr. Roberts realized what was happening when aspartame was first marketed. He said, “His diabetic patients presented memory loss, confusion, and severe vision loss.”
At the Conference of the American College of Physicians, doctors admitted that they did not know. They had wondered why seizures were rampant (the Phenylaline in Aspartame breaks down the seizures threshold and depletes serotonin, which causes manic depression, panic attacks, rage and violence). Just before the Conference, I received a fax from Norway, asking for a possible antidote for this poison because they are experiencing so many problems in their country. This “poison ” is now available in 90 PLUS countries worldwide. Fortunately, we had speakers and ambassadors at the Conference from different nations who have pledged their help. We ask that you help too. Print this article out and warn everyone you know. Take anything that contains Aspartame back to the store. Take the “NO ASPARTAME TEST” and send us your case history. I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is. They fund the American Diabetes Association, American Dietetic Association, Congress, and the Conference of the American College of Physicians. The New York Times, on November 15, 1996, ran an article on how the American Dietetic Association takes money from the food industry to endorse their products. Therefore, they cannot criticize any additives or tell about their link to MONSANTO. How bad is this? We told a mother who had a child on NutraSweet to get off the product. The child was having Grand Mal seizures every day. The mother called her physician, who called the ADA, who told the doctor not to take the child off the NutraSweet. We are still trying to convince the mother that the Aspartame is causing the seizures. Every time we get someone off of Aspartame, the seizures stop. If the baby dies, you know whose fault it is, and what we are up against. There are 92 documented symptoms of Aspartame from coma to death. The majority of them are all neurological because the Aspartame destroys the nervous system. Aspartame Disease is partially the cause to what is behind some of the mystery of the Desert Storm health problems.
The burning tongue and other problems discussed in over 60 cases can be directly related to the consumption of an Aspartame product. Several thousand pallets of diet drinks were shipped to the Desert Storm troops. Diet drinks sat in the 120 degree F Arabian sun for weeks at a time on pallets. The service men and women drank them all day long. All of their symptoms are identical to Aspartame poisoning. Dr. Roberts says consuming Aspartame at the time of conception can cause birth defects. The phenylalanine concentrates in the placenta, causing mental retardation, according to Dr. Louis Elsas, Pediatrician Professor — genetics at Emory University in his testimony before Congress. In the original lab tests, animals developed brain tumors (phenylalinine breaks down into DXP, a brain tumor agent). When Dr. Espisto was lecturing on Aspartame, one physician in the audience, a neurosurgeon, said, “When they remove brain tumors, they have found high levels of Aspartame in them. Stevia, a sweet food, NOT AN ADDITIVE, which helps in the metabolism of sugar, which would be ideal for Diabetics, has now been approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA. For years, the FDA has outlawed this sweet food because of their loyalty to MONSANTO. If it says, SUGAR FREE on the label, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote a bill that would have warned all infants, pregnant mothers and children of the dangers of Aspartame. The bill would have also instituted independent studies on the problems existing in the population (seizures, changes in brain chemistry, changes in neurological and behavioral symptoms). It was killed by the powerful drug and chemical lobbies, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting public. Since the Conference of American College of Physicians, we hope to have the help of some world leaders. Again, please help us too. There are a lot of people out there who must be warned, please let them know this information.
You might want to print it out and hand it out or fax it to people who are not on line.

Illness begins with a loss of concern for ourselves, long before symptoms of disease appear. The first manifestation is loss of self-concern and loss of concern for others. Bad nutrition erodes our capacity to see clearly and our ability to act in our own interest. The environment is fouled and this is no secret. Why do we have a whole generation that is in need of Prozac? What happened to our ability to produce Serotonin (the neurotransmitter that confers mellow moods)? Why are 19 percent of school children on Ritalin? I will give one concrete example to illustrate this issue.
One of the most common agricultural chemicals in use is the family of substances called Hydrazines. They are in jet fuels and pesticides and growth retardants. They are sprayed on all non-organic potatoes in this country. Ever wonder how potatoes can sit in the bins of grocery stores and there isn’t a single eye bud or sign of a sprout? They are covered with Hydrazine, which inhibits the capacity to sprout and prolongs their shelf life. Hydrazine also blocks the action of vitamin B-6 ( pyridoxine), an essential co-factor in thousands of biochemical reactions in the human body.
How do we make Serotonin in our brains? It begins with the amino acid Tryptophan, which is the least abundant amino acid in protein and the most vulnerable to cooking damage. First , we must eat good quality protein and digest and absorb it well before it is transported to the brain, where it is converted to 5-Hydoxy Tryptophan and then to Serotonin by enzymes. Each enzyme step requires vitamin B-6. There is enough hydrazine in one bag of potato chips or one dose of MacDonald’s french fries to negate all the vitamin B-6 in your body. Hence: No Serotonin! And instead: mood disorder, depression and loss of the will to search out these facts and to avooid such toxins and to care for oneself. When you don’t feel well, you are depressed. Health is about food, air and water. Seeking out safe, organic foods and finding healthy water and air are the beginning, long before trying to substitue St. John’s Wort for Prozac in this equation of [treating depression].
