Holistic Approach

Creating success in substance abuse and rehabilitation requires planning and a holistic approach, meaning that you must develop yourself spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. People are often frustrated when trying to achieve their health goals; they might try a few things and then give up when it does’t work. Meeting your goals depends not only on what you put into your body but also more importantly what you tell yourself in your mind. It is as much about your ability to relax as it is about learning how to protect yourself. We do not label people as "addicts" or "alcoholics". We believe that there is a reason behind every person's substance abuse. It could be trauma, or pain management, it could be emotionally based or it could be biological in origin. Usually it’s a bit of all of these combined. If you get to the origin of your issues and learn new coping mechanisms you can overcome any issues of substance abuse and regain your health. Life can become fresh and new again. If however you label yourself as an alcoholic or addict then your behavior will never be more then that. Your identity is what I will ask you to reevaluate when you are here. Developing a positive self image is an important part of your success. Visualize yourself not just stopping the use of some substance but regaining your health back, physically and emotionally. Imagine transitioning yourself from something that is dysfunctional to the life you know is possible when you reconnect with who you naturally are.

Food is the medicine

Probably the single most important factor in recovery and the least understood is food. You can sow the seeds of failure with every bit of food you take .There is a reason why they feed you pastries, starch, sugar, and caffeine when you go to your typical treatment facility or a typical AA meeting. Its a trick to make you think you are actually being successful getting off of your drug or alcohol. It seems like it can help get you off of your addiction but unfortunately it doesn't. Your addiction is being fed by the starch and caffeine. This is one of the main reasons that people find it very easy to start their habit over again soon as they leave these places, because they never really dealt with it in the first place.

Additionally If a facility has more than five people, then they must use commercial sources for food. The food supplied by commercial distributors is completely inadequate for health and healing. Check the ingredients: almost everything is loaded with sugar and chemical preservatives. These foods are not organic, so they have decreased nutrient levels and higher levels of chemicals from fertilizers and pesticides. Most facilities don’t have a clue how food affects a person’s health. For instance, you may have difficulty withdrawing, because your body is too acidic (all drugs and many foods are acid-forming and are harmful to the liver). Some foods are like pouring gasoline onto fire. If you are in pain, then there are certain foods to avoid. Understanding your body’s pH and how food relates to your pH is an important step in your healing journey. Treatment Centers regardless of how expensive they are don't understand ph and are ill equipped to implement an understanding of that in your program. As a result you suffer needlessly. Withdrawal symptoms are related to the ph of your body. The ph of your body is related to the food you eat.

Self-Help vs. Control

Do you have a parent-child relationship with your administrators? Children act appropriately if their parents are around to monitor their behavior, but what happens when they leave? The children do what they want. Is this how your program is structured? The structure of the program is an important factor for success. When you are desperately out of control with your addiction, you might go to someone who just wants to lock you up and control you; In so doing you may become dependent on this approach to survive. Self-help means that you are in control of your program—the program is not in control of you. Most programs are concerned with managing you rather than giving you tools to succeed. Self-help means that you are assuming responsibly for your success. It doesn’t matter how much your program costs—the program itself is not going to save you. You must do the work. Self-healing is the only true form of healing.

Self-Determination vs. Dependency

You either make your own decisions, or you give others the responsibility to make decisions for you. If you are not making decisions for yourself, then you are becoming dependent, and you will not be strong enough to succeed in the real world. In the real world, others will not be responsible for you. A self-help program empowers you and teaches you how to take care of yourself. Drugs whether they are from a medical doctor or over the counter or from the street create dependency. One pill always leads to another. They manipulate your symptoms without getting to the cause of your problem. Dependency makes you weaker not stronger. Drugs are the sign of a magic act and is more of an illusion then real. Its basically a trick, a slight of hand. They shorten your life not prolong it. When people advocate drug therapy its because they don't know anything better to offer you. Or they are not adequately able to offer you an alternative. It doesn't mean that there isn't a better way.

Self-Protection

We experience anger when we become vulnerable to others who take advantage of us. In truth, we are more angry with ourselves than with others. Anger is another form of fear. So what are your fears? And how do you confront the fears that stop you from succeeding?

Learning how to protect yourself is an important aspect of healing. Your body has its own mind. It wants all of the things that your mind knows is bad. Your body is often at odds with your mind, but to experience your real power, they must become one. A mental and physical practice that coordinates your mind and body movements, strengthens your mind and gives you the power to overcome the obstacles standing in your path can be found in learning simple movements of your body.

Learning to protect yourself physically enables you to evolve mentally, emotionally, and physically by training your body and mind to becomes One. Have you ever heard of the phase “Divide and conquer”? It means when you are divided you are easily overtaken. If you are in a boat with ten other people, everyone should row in the same direction. If everyone is rowing in a different direction, then the boat will only turn around in circles. Creating yourself as One gets all the parts of you rowing in the same direction. Here is where your true power lies. Once you become One nothing can stop you.

Your Natural Self

Your natural self is what you were like before you were conditioned to be as you are now. The dysfunction of your life may have been programmed into you like a computer. That is not really who you are. We don’t believe that you are an “alcoholic” or an “addict,” and that is all you are or will be. You are a powerful spiritual being that became overwhelmed by your environment; as a result, you developed coping mechanisms such as taking drugs, alcohol, prescriptions medications, etc.
Your program should be aimed at getting you back to your natural self. Its next to impossible to have that happen in an environment that is not natural. Its not natural to be in a place where there are more then a few people. Your environment , the food you eat or the room you stay in should all be a reflection of your natural self of how your home naturally is. A private facility that can give you the attention you need and deserve is the only way to get you in your most relaxed state and your body able to heal itself naturally and to detoxify effortlessly.

Only nature heals. Your life can be a wonderful existence, but you have to find that part of yourself that is as perfect as nature. Go outside and observe the perfection of nature. You are part of that perfection. The natural state of your being is peace, love and happiness. To find it, you must connect with who you naturally are.

Part of the reason that Michael Jackson was not able to stop using medications is that he feared the painful withdrawal that he would have had to go through. As a result if someone tried to help him he would just distance himself from them. This is a common fear and what keeps people fearful and apprehensive about taking steps they need to get themselves healed. The problem of withdrawal is not understood by most treatment programs and as a result is what most people experience when they go through this process. If a facility has more then a small number of people then they will have to go to a commercial food distributor to supply the foods that people eat. Our facility is a private facility whose program has been designed by a Clinical Nutritionist. As a result we are able to provide a very specialized diet and natural non toxic supplements which can be the foundation for a painless withdrawal experience. Don't become another causality of your own limited understanding in this regard. Brain Disabling Treatments in Psychiatry

by Peter Breggin, MD.
(2008)

The Basic Four Brain -Disabling Principles

1. All biopsychiatric treatments share a common mode of action the disruption of normal brain function.

2. All biopsychiatric interventions cause generalized brain dysfunction.

3. Biopsychiatric treatments exert their therapeutic effect by impairing higher human functions, including emotional responsiveness, social sensitivity, self-awareness or self insight, autonomy, and self-determination. More drastic effects include apathy, euphoria, and mania, and lobotomy-like indifference.

4.Each biopsychiatric treatment produces its essential or primary brain-disabling effect on all people, including normal volunteers and patients with varied psychiatric diagnoses.

Six Additional Brain -Disabling Principles

V. Patients respond to brain-disabling treatments with their own psychological reactions such as apathy, euphoria, compliance or resentment.

VI. To the extent that a physical disorder of the brain affects the individual, currently available biopsychiatric interventions will worsen or add to the disorder.

VII Individual biopsychiatric treatments are not specific for particular mental disorders.

VIII. The brain attempts to compensate physically for the disabling effects of biopsychiatric interventions, frequently causing additional adverse reactions and withdrawal problems.

IX. Physicians who prescribe biopsychiatric interventions often have an unrealistic appraisal of their risks and benefits.

X. Patients subjected to biopsychiatric interventions often display poor judgment about the positive and negative effects of the treatment on their mental and emotional functioning, often causing intoxication amosognosia (medication spellbinding)*.

*Medication Spellbinding:
Medication Madness
(Breggin, 2006)

First, spellbound individuals fail to perceive the degree of mental or emotional impairment that the drugs are inflicting on them.

Second, spellbound individuals tend to rationalize and justify their drug-induced mental distress, typically blaming negative feelings on themselves or on something else, sometimes leading to violence against themselves or others.

Third, spellbound individuals often feel as if they are doing better then ever when in reality they are doing worse.

Fourth, extreme spellbinding produces medication madness in which the individual feels driven or compelled to behave in out of character and potentially disastrous ways.....i.e. violence, suicide, etc.

The spellbound actions are typically carried out without individual realizing that he or she is drug impaired and without the individual stopping to consider or grasping the disastrous consequences.
